Dowd Chase is the only son of the renowned Wizard, Dwayle Chase, who married a clever Human named Dye Kaspy. Dye Kaspy was renowned for her talents as a seer and fortuneteller and it was said she had a bit of Glueller blood in her family history.
While Dowd was a still a young boy, his mother was poisoned and killed by Derwin Deesh, a servant of Dowd’s father. Derwin Deesh was corrupted by the Faerie Lord, who turned Deesh against his master and made him an instrument of his dark designs. At the time of his mother’s murder, even though Dowd Chase was only a young Wizard, he had amazing skills. Enraged, he cast a powerful spell that killed Derwin Deesh. Afterward, Dowd Chase felt a great remorse that caused him to turn away from Wizardry, vowing never again to use Magick.
After the murder of his wife, Dwayle Chase understood that the Faerie Lord would not stop until he had destroyed all the family. To protect his son, Dwayle Chase made arrangements to hide his son with friends. He also made plans to go into hiding himself by disappearing into the Northern Mountains from which no one ever returns. On the day he was to leave, Dwayle Chase implored his son to take up the fight against the Faerie Lord when he was old enough, an oath Dowd Chase refused to swear. In his mind, Dowd Chase blamed his family of Wizards and their centuries of meddling in Magick for the death of his mother. After his father’s disappearance, Dowd Chase refused to stay with friends, as his father had arranged. Instead, he traveled westward, losing himself first among the Gluellers and later among the Humans, living on the edges of civilization and largely keeping to himself.
In his younger years, before all the sorrowful turns, Dowd Chase had been a bright student of Wizardry. In fact, many of the old Masters will tell you that Dowd Chase was as promising a student of Wizardry as any who ever studied inside the walls of the Tower of the Westerly High Order. They will tell you that, before he rejected his craft and his family’s heritage, Dowd Chase had already developed a masterful command of fire and thunder spells, an amazing proficiency with the Ancient Tongues of Magick, something of the farsightedness, and a surprising facility with the watery elements.
For some of the great Wizards of the time, it was a sorrowful day, indeed, when Down Chase turned away from his destiny.
